Statement About Fundraising

Texas has a long tradition of electing judges. Contested elections cost money. Anybody who meets the minimal legal qualifications to serve as a judge can run to be elected, but sitting judges are properly held to a higher standard of ethical conduct in their personal and professional lives, and this includes limitations on judges' conduct in the course of conducting campaigns to retain their offices.

Within the limitations of the law, I welcome the financial support of those who wish to support my campaign, and who understand that my decisions as a judge will never be influenced in any way by the fact that somebody has supported my campaign, or the amount of anyone's contribution. I have voluntarily accepted the restrictions of the Judicial Campaign Fairness Act, Texas Election Code secs. 253.151-.176.

I honor the right of Texans to decide for themselves how to select judges. I honor our legislature as the proper venue for any decisions about reforming our state laws about judicial selection and judicial campaign finance. I encourage all citizens, particularly the bar and our legislature, to consider reforms to address the inherent problems arising from partisan elections involving sitting judges.
